CMT Twenty10 Chassis build taking shape

The CMT Twenty10 chassis is soon to take it's shape and bound to create a buzz amoungst the team.

The fabrication of the chassis always marks the real begining of the build for us and sets in motion a few months of intense manufacture.

With the jig being assembled this week, we are soon to start piecing together all the bars that have been bent and cut to size.

The jig is mostly new but because the chassis design is still very similar to the CMT 09 car we are able to re-use some of the old jig components.

Unfortunately one of our designers made a mistake ordering the laser cut jig sections and some and cut from thinner plate steel than required, it's an easy mistake to make and we are all in the team to learn so we'll let that one slide for now. Let's hope there's not many other mistakes.

In terms of design quality and the amount of design work going into the Twenty 10 car, we are in front. This year has seen a good step in the right direction with more students doing more designs early in the year. With as much of the car modelled on the computer software as possible we can eliminate assembly problems, like packaging of components. The only thing is it takes a little extra time to plan the build correctly so we tend to seem a little behind where we would like to be.

With any volunteer project you always have to compete with the rest of 'life', everything from our own study, to part time jobs and just plain old boring house work takes time away from the design and the away from the build so we are always juggling with our members to try and fit in what we can when we can. It's hard to put in the time you want when you are doing it just out of shear passion.

Keep your eyes on this space there are bound to be plenty of team pics coming soon.

We must apologise for the lack of visual stimulation for our followers, we have just finished exams so the admin side of the team has taken a backward position while most of us try to get as much of the design work done before the uni semester starts up again.

This time of year always has a funny feel to it, almost like the calm before the storm.....although it's never really all that calm at CMT.... always something that needs to be done......I guess that's FSAE for you.
